Today I’d like to change it up a little and instead of writing about solar light fixtures I would like to spend some time talking about a very clever an creative use of lighting that most people never even think of. The topic of our conversation today will be on patio umbrella lights. Your probably thinking to yourself, what in the heck is he talking about? If you haven’t heard of patio umbrella lights you wouldn’t be the first. This type of outdoor patio lighting is relatively obscure and not commonly used. It’s a real shame too because patio umbrella lighting can add a really cozy feeling to your patio area.
So what is a patio umbrella light? Well, quite simply it’s just a light fixture that is either built into the patio umbrella or attaches to the patio umbrella shaft. In some cases the fixture might look like a chandelier and have several light fixtures branching out from the umbrella shaft. In other cases the light bulbs may be built into the actual umbrella spars.
Installing patio umbrella lights is really quite simple. You simply clamp the fixtures mounting bracket around the umbrella shaft and tighten mounting bolts. If your patio umbrella has a hollow umbrella shaft, you can make the installation a little tidier by drilling a hole in the shaft and running that cord down to the ground and out through another hole in the bottom of the shaft.
This of course isn’t necessary. Many times people simply use plastic zip ties to secure the cord to the umbrella shaft. Usually the cord is run through the hole in the table, down to the base of the umbrella shaft, and then out to the electric outlet to be plugged in.
Some patio umbrella lights come with dimmer switches installed on them but if the one you buy doesn’t, you can plug and inline dimmer switch and between the cord of the umbrella light and the electrical outlet. Being able to turn down the lights can really enhance the mood.
